After breakfast, we would begin drive towards Kargil (approx. 6-7 hours). The route takes us through the beautiful meadows of Sonamarg. From Sonamarg, the landscape starts changing dramatically all the way as we cross the famous Zoji La pass towards Drass.  A few kms beyond Drass is the Drass war memorial, built in the memory of soldiers martyred in the 1999 Kargil war and is a must visit for every traveler passing through this route. Overnight stay in Kargil.

After breakfast, we start our journey towards the fascinating remote Aryan villages of Dha and Hanu via Batalik. In these villages reside the Brokpa community, who are considered to be the last race of Aryans confined to the valley.

They are believed to have perhaps descended from the army of Alexander the Great, and to have migrated from the Gilgit region in the present day Pakistan, an event which must have occurred well before Gilgit came under the influence of Islam.

Their language is said to be akin to that spoken in Gilgit and by immigrants from Gilgit settled in the Drass south of Kargil. Their culture and religious practices are very similar to ancient pre- Buddhist religion known as Bon-Chos.  The community focuses mainly on growing apricots, grapes and apples. Apricots from this region are renowned for their sweetness and the seeds are used for producing oil. The Brokpas have a unique sense of dressing, especially women wearing ornate head-coverings made from silver, beads and artificial flowers.

Overnight stay in Hanu village.

After breakfast, we drive towards Leh. Enroute we visit Lamayuru, one of the oldest monasteries in the region. The landscape here is called “Moonland”, as it resembles the lunar landscape.

The journey also takes us via the Gurudwara Pathar Sahib, Confluence of Indus & Zanskar rivers and the popular “Magnetic hill” that is located about 30 km from Leh, at a height of 14,000 feet above sea level. Here you can see the unusual phenomenon of your vehicle going upwards on its own at a speed with the engines off.

We reach the town of Leh, where you will be checked into your accommodation for overnight stay. Overnight stay in Leh.

Full day sightseeing of Leh, wherein we shall the famous Thiksey Monastery, famous for its 49 ft High statue of Maitreya Buddha, covering two storeys of the building.  Later, we shall visit the Shey Gompa, Stok Palace and a 200 year old traditional Ladakhi house to get a glimpse of the local lifestyle and get to enjoy a cup of Butter tea, a ladakhi beverage.

After a brief halt, we continue our drive to Turtuk village located in Baltistan, near the Indo-Pakistan border.  The border village, which forms part of the famed Silk Route used to belong to Pakistan, until it was recaptured by the Indian Army in 1971. Baltistan is culturally, linguistically and historically different from Ladakh though closely linked. The landscape here is different too, dramatically narrow valleys and close steep mountains, unlike Central Ladakh and Nubra.

The people in Turtuk are predominantly Balti Muslims who cultivate wheat, buckwheat, apricots and tomatoes in the fertile soil churned by the tributaries of the turbulent Shayok River. Evening free to explore the picturesque village. Overnight stay at Deluxe Camps in Turtuk.

After breakfast, we shall leave Turtuk and drive to Hunder village (approx. 2 hours) where you will be checked into your Hotel on arrival. Later, we shall visit Diskit Monastery. One can see an impressive 32 metre (106 feet) Maitreya Buddha statue on top of a hill below the monastery facing the Shyok River. Other attractions include the White Sand dunes and Camel Safari on the double humped camels which are found only in Nubra.  Overnight stay at Deluxe Camps in Nubra.

After breakfast, you shall drive to the beautiful crystal clear, color-changing high altitude lake, the Pangong lake (approx. 4 hours) located next to the China border via Shyok. This lake is one of the most beautiful lakes in the world. Overnight stay at Deluxe Camps near lakeside.

After breakfast, you shall drive back to Leh(approx. 5 hours) via Changla Pass.  On the way back, we shall visit Hemis Monastery. Overnight stay in Leh.
